Azelaic acid topical falls into FDA pregnancy category B. This category means that it should not be harmful to an unborn baby. However in the case of azelaic acid, there have not been any types of studies that have been done to effectively tell if azelaic acid affects pregnant women.
Women should not use azelaic acid topical without talking to their doctor first if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment. Azelaic Acid & Pregnancy Trials
For most drugs studies are done to test how they can affect an unborn child. These are called Dermal embryofetal developmental toxicology studies and are done all the time. In the case of azelaic acid, there have not been any significant tests done. There were some tests done on animals regarding azelaic acid and pregnancy and it was observed some amount of maternal toxicity. However other tests were done with higher than normal percentages on various animals and no effect were noted on the animal’s fetus.
